Kiteboarding in Vancouver
What to know before you go
Many people live in Vancouver for the easy access to adventure. From mountain biking on the North Shore, to breathtaking seawall walks, to skiing in Whistler just an hour away. Vancouver is the place to be if you’re into adventure.
When it comes to windsports like kiteboarding and wingfoiling, one of the main local spots is Spanish Banks, right in the heart of Kits. It’s a sandy beach with thermal winds a few times a week in the summer. While the wind can be gusty, the views of the city and mountains from the water are stunning.
Learning to Kiteboard?
Why Victoria may be a better bet
Kiteboarding in Vancouver does come with some challenges. Due to the high population density within the city, kiteboarders are only allowed to launch from a specific section of the beach. On top of that, the unpredictable and gusty winds can lead to lulls in the breeze and stressful situations in the active channel.
For that reason, a lot of riders actually make the trip over to Victoria (Clover Point), or Nitinat Lake on Vancouver Island, where the wind is more consistent. Clover Point boasts some of the best thermal winds around, and it's right in the city! Tall ocean bluffs create updrafts that allow for big jumps and beautiful scenery. However, launching is slightly more advanced due to the onshore winds
